Adobe Photoshop CS4 – Full Review

If you’re a photographer, then there’s a good chance that the most signficant announcement of the year is not a new camera or new lens, but the release of Photoshop CS4. While Photoshop can’t turn a crappy photo into a masterpiece – you still need decent gear and a fair amount of skill to capture a good image – it is still the best tool for realizing the final vision that you had when you shot. Photoshop serves many different disciplines from photography to design to research, and Photoshop upgrades often add features that are of little use on the photographic side of things. And while CS4 packs a few new items that most shooters will have no interest in, the new features are largely additions that all photographers will be interested in |
Major upgrades to Adobe applications often include interface changes, and CS4 is no exception. Fortunately, Adobe’s efforts in this direction are largely unobtrusive, and yield an application that is truly more streamlined. Performance is improved, and there are several new tools which you’ll appreciate just for their sophistication, whether or not you use them that often. For the photographer who shoots a lot, workflow is as important an issue as editing features, and Bridge CS4 packs a lot of important workflow changes.
Overall, CS4 is an excellent, essential upgrade for photographers of all skill levels, and you can learn more about it by reading my lengthy, full review.

Will CS3 Action pack work with CS4? Ben, action pack is that useful I can’t go to CS4 until I know I won’t loose the actions I’ve created. Famous or what!

Simon,
I can’t imagine that your actions will not work.
Tks for posting the review. Glad to hear my CS3 Bridge wasn’t the only one that routinely crashed. Drove me nuts.
Great review. I completely agree with your assessment of Photoshop CS4. Most definitely a worthy upgrade. I’ve found that all my CS3 plug-ins work with CS4 which was a great relief to me. One thing that I was disappointed about is that they really didn’t change anything in regards to how PS processes HDR images. I guess it’s not a big deal because I use Photomatix, but it would be nice to have fewer plugins to worry about.
Thanks for the review!
CS5 is a massive jump forward
There is a video of the new feature on http://www.photoshopcs5.co.uk/ for any who want to take a look
