The Canon Digital Rebel XSi/450D Companion
![]() |
The Rebel XSi is a great camera (and you can learn more about it here). If you’re lucky enough to have one, you can learn more about how to use it with my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi/450 Companion. While that’s a bit of a mouthful, I promise the text inside the book is concise and to the point, and should do a good job at teaching you how to use your new camera. |
Rather than serving as a replacement manual, this book is an entire photography course from camera setup to post-production. However, it’s a course built specifically around the XSi. So, all of the specific theories and techniques that you learn will be detailed in XSi-specific terms and controls.
I structured the book based on what I’ve learnd from years of teaching, as well as from years of revising various other photography instruction books. I think you’ll find that the approach in this book leads you easily through everything from basic exposure and composition, to advanced exposure and shooting situations – and every lesson is explained using the specific buttons and menu options on your camera. Along the way, you’ll learn every feature of the XSi.

Have you done this with the 40d yet?
I just bought this book yesterday and it is very easy to understand and is much better than the manual that came wiht it aas far as explaining what each function does specifically.
I bought this book and I am happy and very satisfied.
i purchased my xsi just after christmas, followed by your book in january, although the manual supplied with the camera does a good job, your book takes it to the next level the theory, and how to use that theory, is just what the doctor ordered, photograpy is fun, thanks for a great book.
This is a great introduction to the Rebel XSi and digital photography.
The XSi is my first digital camera after drifiting away from photography in the mid-70s. So I didn’t know much of anything about digital photography, RAW files, Lightroom, etc. Your book was a great refresher for what I did know and an even better introduction to the stuff that I didn’t. I’ve now studied it through for the third time and feel much more comfortable in using the XSi.
My only negative comment is that I think you should make a bigger quality distinction between the cheap Canon lenses and the better ones. The perfectionist in me has led me to the legendary 135 mm f2 and the 100 mm macro and these are in an entirely different league, both in quality and in cost, than the lenses you mention. I recognize that most people are not going to buy L quality lenses, but I don’t consider the 18-55 kit lens to be “great.”
That said, I really appreciate the book.
Dear Ben Long,
I have “Capture NX 2″ and have worked through most of it. It’s a very impressive book and I’m delighted with it.
I’d like to know about Capture NX2.2. I’v downloaded it to my Program File but have not installed it. Is there any problem with the installation that I should know about?
Sincerely,
Don Bateman
