Don Byron – Shooting in the Dark

Over the last several years, I’ve had the opportunity to shoot jazz clarinetest Don Byron with an array of Canon digital SLRs. If you need to do concert or auditorium photography, these images show what you can expect from Canon gear.

Over the last several years, I’ve had the priveledge of touring with noted jazz clarinetest Don Byron. Serving as technical director for his somewhat elaborate children’s show, I’ve also had lots of time to shoot the band playing their regular gigs. These jobs have come at just-regular-enough intervals that I’ve now shot him in dark theaters using a Canon EOS D30, D60, 10D and 20D. Because the shooting situations are always very similar – Dark – these images serve as good examples of the kind of quality that Canon’s EOS series – even the original D30 – can deliver when shooting with nothing but dim stage lighting.

If you’re not familiar with Don Byron’s music, check out this video about Ivey-Divey, Byron’s new trio recording with Jack DeJohnette and Jason Moran.

  3. I’ve been using the 1Ds Mark II and its performance at ISO 1600 is phenomenal.

  5. I attended a concert recently at an informal night club and shot quite a few photos of a singer with his group. Is there legalities in posting these photos on my website? They will not be printable and not for sale.
