Start Photoshop Roundtrip, an Automator Action for Aperture

Aperture’s Open in External Editor command provides a simple, effective way for you to easily take images from Photoshop to Aperture and back again. To provide some additional Aperture automation possibilities, I’m offering this Start Photoshop Roundtrip action which lets you add Aperture’s Open in External Editor command to your Automator workflows.

Installation

To install the action, download the Stuffit archive from the link provided below. After unstuffing, place the Start Photoshop Roundtrip.action document into Home > Library > Automator. If a folder doesn’t exist in this location, create one.

Now launch Automator and click on Aperture in the Library pane. If the action doesn’t appear, then restart Automator and hold down the Option key while the program opens. This will force Automator to rebuild is database of actions.

Start Photoshop Roundtrip requires that you enable GUI Scripting. Open Applications > AppleScript and launch the AppleScript utility. Check the Enable GUI Scripting checkbox.

Using Start Photoshop Roundtrip

To use the action, first create a new workflow in Automator.

Add the Start Photoshop Roundtrip to the beginning of the workflow.

In Aperture, select the images that you want to send to Photoshop.

Return to Automator and run your workflow. Aperture will come to the front and ask you how many images you’ve selected. Enter the number and press OK. The Open in External Editor command will execute. New versions of your selected images will be created (this may take a while) and then those new versions will be opened in Photoshop.

The Start Photoshop Roundtrip action does not pass control on to the rest of your workflow until your stated number of documents have been opened in Photoshop. (Using AppleScript, there’s currently no way to determine which documents in Aperture are selected.)

This action is particularly useful when combined with the Photoshop Action Pack.

If you find this action useful, please don’t be at all shy about PayPal-ing me some cash! $5! $10! $1.2 million! I’m not picky! Just click this button right here:

  2. HELP! I downloaded the Start Photoshop Round Trip Action and the PSCS3 Action Pack and I am trying to Add a Graphic Watermark Photoshop Action to my photos in Automator. When I run the first action in my worklflow the Start Photoshop Roundtrip gets nowhere. Just keeps spinning! Can you send me a step by step workflow to Add a Graphic Watermark that I created as a Photoshop Action in Automator? Thanks! Debbie
