Taking Action With Photoshop Actions

Speedy workflow is one of the most obvious advantages of shooting digital, but even though you don’t have to mess with processing and printing, managing and correcting large numbers of digital images can still be a hassle. Fortunately, Photoshop can ease these chores with its handy Action facility.

This article presents an introduction to Photoshop Actions, and provides you with the groundwork you need for a number of workflow automation articles that we’ll be posting in the future. Though Photoshop Actions are powerful in their own right, they become more useful once you start controlling them with your own custom AppleScript and JavaScripts. Though simple AppleScript graphics processing has been covered here, script-based image processing and management is a topic we’re going to explore in much more detail over the ensuing months.

  2. Photoshop actions have indeed been a huge time saver in speeding up workflow between capture and printing.
I have been using actions to make tifs from jpgs, for re-sizing, for resampling up, for final
unsharp masking, for adding copyright, for adding logos…..
Mr. Long I had a real problem with your second edition of Complete Digital Photograhy in
teaching my class for Digital Imageing because of the many typos.
I managed to make a list of them for the students so that I could use the book as a text for
three semesters, because I found your book to be the most ” Complete” indeed.
I’ll be using your 3rd edition in the Fall. I pray that the typo problems have been taken care
