Foundations of Photography: Composition

It doesn’t matter how technically perfect you are with your exposure, if you compose a boring shot, you’ll have a boring picture. If you find yourself shooting boring pictures, and would like to stop, you might consider checking out my Foundations of Photography: Composition course at Lynda.com.

Eschewing simple rules, this course works you through a series of shooting exercises, with the goal of developing an eye and a feel for composition. There are no composition rules that are appropriate for every situation. Instead, you want to have a compositional toolbox that can be mixed, matched, and adapted to whatever subject matter you find. This course aims to give you such a toolbox.

To help simulate the interaction that you’d receive in a live Composition course, the course is built around a live workshop. You’ll see the feedback that other students receive, and hear some of their interpretations of the ideas presented.

Make your compositions better, check out Foundations of Photography: Composition.

  2. Hi Ben,

For someone new to photography, which of your courses would you recommend to start with? Exposure? Composition?

  4. Hi Jay,

I’d start with Exposure, then do Lenses. From there, move on to Composition and then Low Light. If you’re interested in Black and White, probably good to pick it up next.

    Have fun!

  6. I just finished watching this course. I must say that it’s outstanding. I wish there was more like it out there. Mechanics (exposure, etc.) come easy to me. It’s unleashing my artistic side that I struggle with. I just can’t say enough good things about his course. Not only would I like to see more photography courses like this, I’d sure like to see Lynda.com address artistic design principals with all the apps it covers. Major kudos to you, Ben Long, and THANK YOU!

  8. Pf. Long, amazing just amazing!!! I have done several of your courses on Lynda.com and the 20 bucks I pay a month for the service is nothing compare to the quality of 5min on one of your courses… I am a complete amateur in photography and I was so please to find your courses on Lynda.com
I was wondering if you ever come to Europe to teach courses in person???
If you ever stop by in Spain and feel like it, It would be a pleasure for me to help you around this country… Thanks, I.

  10. I just began you courses on lynda.com and was so excited to find such a resource on the web at a reasonable price. However, I cannot get your videos to load. A two minute video takes ten minutes to load. I sent a support ticket to them and, hopefully, they can offer some advice. If not, is there another way to view your videos? I wanted to watch all that you had to offer.
