As amazing as current digital camera technology is, it can’t compare with those two squishy orbs in the front of your head. In addition to great autofocus, exceptional white balance, and amazing low light capabilities, your eyes also have tremendous dynamic range (that is, an ability to perceive an extremely wide range of dark to light). In fact, your eyes probably have almost twice the dynamic range as the digital camera you’re currently using.

Because of this dynamic range difference, you’ll often find situations where your eye can see details in bright highlights and dark shadows simultaneously, yet when you take a picture of the scene, your camera reveals only the bright highlights. These “high dynamic range” situations can be handled in several different ways, but one of the most compelling solutions is to shoot multiple, bracketed exposures, and then merge the results using special HDR software.

In my new Lynda.com course, Shooting and Processing High Dynamic Range Photographs, you’ll see how to shoot and process HDR images using a variety of applications, and how to re-touch HDR images to get the best results. Ideal for shooters of all skill levels, you’ll only need rudimentary Photoshop skills to follow along.

The course is available right now, right here.

  2. The title is for HDR course and the link is for “Shooting with 60D”.

Really enjoyed your first two lynda.com tutorials, about Exposure and Lenses. B&W was not bad, pretty interesting, as well as the one on HDR, although they seemed a bit weaker than the first two in the “Foundations” series (maybe just me though). Then watched about Landscape Photography and that one was good as well.

You’re a good teacher, out of all the gazillions of lynda.com tutorials I’ve watched for the past few years yours were the best ones. Really looking forward for other courses from you.

  6. There is no such title at Lynda.com. The link provided above takes you to Canon 60D tutorial!

The nearest relative title is “Shooting and Processing High Dynamic Range Photographs” (link below)

  8. Ben I’m taking your Exposure course on Lynda.com right now and LOVE it!!!

I’m a real estate agent and use HDR for my home photos, so I’m REALLY looking forward to the new course as well as the Lenses course!

BTW, your explanation of f/stop was the simplest one I’ve ever heard and I FINALLY GET IT!! And the section on reciprocity was outstanding. I’ve tried to read books, have friends teach me, etc. but I always end up back on Auto. This course on Exposure makes me feel like there’s hope for me yet! Keep up the great work!

  16. Ben, I love your courses on Lynda.com which I was able to access through my employer (University). I have gotten so interested in photography in the last month but it is a little hard to get much time for it. Most of my photos are of my daughter. That’s ok. I enjoy photoshopping her hanging from cliffs and sending it to my mom.
